MEDUPI POWER STATION - MAIN CIVIL WORKS AWARD
The Medupi Power Station Joint Venture, comprising
Murray & Roberts Construction, Concor and Grinaker-LTA
has secured the main civil work package for the Medupi
Power Station, 15 km west of Lephalale in the Limpopo
province.
The Medupi Power Station is the first new coal fired
power station to be built in twenty years and when fully
commissioned will generate approximately 4,500 MW and be
the biggest coal fired plant in the world.
The scope of work for this 52 month project will
include the civil works associated with the main power
island and the ancillary structures. In total, some 550
000 m3 of concrete, 600 000 m2 of formwork and 60 000 t
of reinforcing steel will be used. Site establishment
will start in May 2008 and the scheduled contract
completion is 2012. The project value is approximately
three billion rand.
Collectively, the joint venture amasses the majority
of the civil industry capability and represents the
majority of the intellectual property and experience on
the building of power stations within the civil
construction fraternity in South Africa.
An important aspect of the Joint Venture proposal was
its value offering to uplift CIDB (Construction Industry
Development Board) Level 6 to 8 BEE contractors.
The extremely short delivery time increases the
complexity and challenges faced on this project. A
challenge posed by the project is the 38 other work
packages that will need to seamlessly interface with the
main civil contractor’s work. |
